Vasectomy is a method of elective sterilization for men who do not desire to have any more children. Vasectomy is not castration and most men who undergo the procedure are still able to function sexually afterwards. Vasectomy is generally considered permanent although it can be reversed in some cases. Vasectomy works by cutting and sealing the vas deferens thereby blocking the passage of sperm. The procedure is relatively simple and is performed in-office by Dr. Freedman (a hospital visit is not usually required). Men that are interested in scheduling a vasectomy with Dr. Freedman will need to first schedule a consultation to learn more about the procedure and the required preparation. It is important to note that a vasectomy does not take effect immediately as some sperm remain in the vas deferens after the procedure. Typically 15–20 ejaculations are required to flush the remaining sperm from the vas deferens. Until two consecutive semen analyses come back negative (typically 8–10 weeks after the procedure), patients that have had a vasectomy are considered fertile and should continue to use additional contraception.
Dr. Freedman was the first physician in Las Vegas to offer the "No Scalpel" technology for vasectomy. He was trained in 1986 by Dr. Phillip Li, who invented the procedure. The "No Scalpel" vasectomy procedure is performed in a comfortable setting with minimal complications. Dr. Freedman has been performing this procedure for over 24 years and has provide permanent contraception for over 2000 patients.
