Southwest Urology provides comprehensive urology services, which include but are not limited to the following:

The Prostate

The prostate produces the fluid that gives the sperm energy to swim and is important for fertility when we are young. The gland is the size of a walnut found just below the bladder. The prostate wraps around a tube (the urethra) that carries urine from the bladder through the tip of the penis.

Common prostate problems

  • Prostate Cancer Affecting 50 percent of all men over 50 years old, prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer in men and is the second highest cause of cancer deaths in men. With early detection, the chance of recovery is high. A blood test called a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) makes early detection possible and is recommended annually for men 50 years old and over.
  • Enlarged Prostate Also known as BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), it is an enlarged but otherwise normal prostate. An enlarged prostate is common in older men but may cause problems such as frequent urination, bleeding, urinary tract infections, or the inability to completely empty your bladder. Though BPH is not cancer, it may require treatment by a physician.

About Our Services
Common treatments for BPH include medications that either help shrink the prostate or open the channel that passes through the prostate as well as in-office laser and microwave treatments and surgery when necessary.

Treatments for prostate cancer include surgery, radiation (external and internal), and medication.

Incontinence

Approximately 30 to 50 percent of all women and 10 percent of all men in the U.S. suffer in some degree from urinary incontinence, or the involuntary leakage of urine. Problems range from slight dripping when someone laughs, coughs, or sneezes to completely emptying the bladder with no prior warning.

Though anyone at any age can suffer from incontinence, it's commonly seen in women in their late 40's, around menopause, who have experienced at least one vaginal delivery. Incontinence can be embarrassing, disabling and extremely uncomfortable, diminishing your quality of life. But, almost everyone's incontinence can be improved with treatment.

About Our Services
Physicians at Southwest Urology offer a variety of surgical and nonsurgical treatments for this condition including biofeedback, medication, behavioral therapies, collagen injections, bladder neck suspension, and insertion of artificial sphincters.

Kidneys

The kidneys job is to filter chemicals that the body cannot use out of the blood. When your two kidneys are healthy, waste chemicals dissolve in the urine and are carried out of the body.

Common kidney problems

  • Kidney Stones Under certain conditions, chemicals build up in the kidney and stick together to form stones. Kidney stones may block the flow of urine and cause excruciating pain.
  • Kidney Infections Usually less painful than kidney stones, kidney infections are very serious and require immediate medical attention.

About Our Services
In treating kidney stones, Southwest Urology physicians frequently use a non-invasive procedure, called lithotripsy.

Lithotripsy is a method of crushing the kidney stone while it's still inside your body. The doctor carefully directs shock waves through your body and hits the stone, causing it to crumble like sand and then easily pass with your urine. This procedure takes about an hour and usually does not require an overnight hospital stay.

Impotence

Impotence is the inability to achieve and/or maintain an erection that is firm enough or lasts long enough to have successful intercourse.

One in 10 men are affected by continuing or chronic impotence. Unfortunately, it is difficult to talk about. The first step is to seek professional help.

About Our Services
The good news is most impotence problems can be treated successfully! In more than half of all impotence, the cause is physical - the result of diabetes, a hormone problem, blocked arteries, etc. In other cases, the cause is psychological - the result of stress or depression. Impotence is not a problem you should have to live with, or that will simply go away. It's important to see a doctor.

Depending on your diagnosis, your recommended treatment may be surgical. Medical treatments range from simply changing your prescription drugs, hormone replacement therapy, antidepressant therapy, the use of a vacuum erection device, or self-injection therapy to produce erections. Surgical treatment involves the implantation of a penile prosthesis.

Male Infertility

At one time infertility was considered primarily a female problem. We know better today. Infertility occurs almost equally in men and women. Common causes of male infertility include:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Infection
  • Injury
  • Abnormal or malfunctioning sperm cells
  • Medical problems such as diabetes mellitus

About Our Services
Depending on the diagnosis, your recommended treatment may be medical or surgical. Medical treatment would be directed at correcting a hormone imbalance or toward stimulating sperm production. Surgical therapy would be aimed at relieving obstruction of the tubes that carry sperm through the body, or correcting a problem associated with dilated veins around the testis that can reduce sperm production by increasing the temperature around the testicle.
